Slow - Close - Engaged

Concept Diagram

The furnitures in my project are carefully positioned right on the circulation paths so that the people can slow down, turn and look around the books, people and spaces surrounding them to provoke more engagements between all these elements, which therefore could potentially arouse a new form of communication.

Program Diagram

In order to activate all the components within the space, the reading desks are encompassed by the shelves immersed in the open circulation space without a pre-determined circulation path; the users are free to explore the space in their own pattern. Walking inside this project is an adventure analogous to reading, where it profoundly initiates an unpredictable journey for the readers.

The project extended from the existing Boston Public Library, traversing the road to the Copley Plaza, surrounded by the historical churches and buildings that house various social activities throughout the year. Therefore, this building is lavitated to minimize the impacts on the plaza and has several cut-aways as responses to the urban context.

Plans

Each shelf and space is designed individually infusing the space with distinctive characters. The occupants are surrounded by the bookshelves 3 dimensionally, submerged into the ambiance. The stacks not only subdivide the space but also connect them through the openings which always give the people a peek or a sense of what is happening behind and between these layers to maintain the people’s curiosity of exploring. There are two layers of stacks: on the floor for people and from the ceiling for robotic arms.
